Dolores "Dee" A. Nelson

Dolores A. “Dee” Nelson, 87, of Galesburg, passed away peacefully at home on October 1st, 2021 at 1:43 p.m., surrounded by her loved ones.

Dee was born April 25, 1934, in Galesburg, the daughter of Lawrence E. and Amy M. (Johnson) Nelson. She grew up in the Galesburg area and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1951.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Skene of Galesburg and Tina Gavlin (Thomas) of Elmhurst; her special companion, Dennis Stoneking of Galesburg; four grandchildren, Meriah Houser (Kris), Leah Johnson, Thomas Gavlin III (Jessica) and Kyla Gavlin; seven great-grandchildren, Cole and Maddox Houser, Monika Jarvis, Dominik Lozano, Trevor Hutchins, Cora and Andrew Gavlin; and a brother, Lawrence (Tilma) Nelson Jr, of Loveland, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents and her former husband, Jack L. Kimmitt, father of her 2 children.

After graduating from Galesburg High School in 1951, Dee worked in several jobs before marrying and raising a family. In 1962, she began a 38-year career as the Assistant to the Associate Dean of Knox College. She loved working on campus, in historic Old Main, and enjoyed being a member of the Knox College community.

She was a loving and supportive mother and proud grandmother, eager to provide lessons and opportunities for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, to name a few; visiting with family, working in her yard and a good cup of coffee with sugar and cream.

Cremation will be accorded. The family is hosting a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 24, 2021 at Hope Wesleyan Church, 867 N. Farnham St. in Galesburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Galesburg Rescue Mission and Women’s Shelter.
