87 of Moline, IL and formerly of Abingdon, IL, died at 5:15 am Monday, January 5, 2009 at Heartland Health Care Center in Moline. He was born on April 24, 1921 in Astoria, IL to Ira E. and Sara Mae Clover Hopping. Don is survived by his brother, Everett L. "Bud" (and Maxine) Hopping of Moline, IL; two sisters, Catherine "Ilene" Stambaugh of Aurora, IL and Doris Crabtree of Alton, IL; several nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Clayton, Dale, Marshall and Marvin. He grew up in Abingdon and graduated from Abingdon High School in 1939. He later served in the US Army during WW II and was stationed in Alaska where he helped build the ALCAN Highway across Alaska. He was a past member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon. He had lived in Moline since 1964. He worked at the International Harvester Company in Moline, retiring as a machinist. Don loved fishing and spending time at his cottage on the Chippewa River near Radisson, Wisconsin. He also enjoyed reading and ice cream. Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Friday, January 9, 2009 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel, 206 N. Washington St., Abingdon, IL. Rev. Robert Tillman will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Friday at the chapel. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Cancer Society. He was the patriarch of the family, letting everyone know what was going on in and with the family. Everyone is invited to join the family at a luncheon in honor of Don which will be served at the community room at the Abingdon Banking Center, 805 N. Monroe St., Abingdon, IL following the services.
