Earl E. Ortery

88, of 404 S. Main St. died at 4:45 am Thursday, July 29, 2004 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. He was born on December 15, 1915 in Monmouth to George and Gladys Ishmael Ortery. He married Billie W. Chenault on August 20, 1937 in New London, Missouri. They enjoyed their lives together for 52 years. She preceded him in death on October 12, 1989. Surviving are four sisters, Hazel Sheckles of Seaton, IL; Bertha (and Albert) Finch of Keithsburg; Edith Turnquist of Yucca Valley, CA and Bettie Johanson of Moline. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Freddie and Leonard and one infant sister, Alice. He had lived in Abingdon since 1941. He worked at the former American Sanitary Manufacturing Company (Brass Factory) in Abingdon for 29 ½ years and later at the Abingdon Pottery for 3 years, retiring in 1977. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He enjoyed sitting by the Mississippi River. Graveside service will be at 1:00 pm Saturday at the Greenmound Cemetery in Keithsburg. Rev. Charles Reynolds will officiate. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon is in charge of arrangements.
