79, of 806 W. Monmouth St. died at 5:30 pm Monday, January 21, 2008 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. He was born on August 15, 1928 near Lake Bracken on the family farm to Frederick O. and Cora Jane Skinner Kjellander. He married Bernice Ann Fahlund on July 19, 1957 in Knoxville. She survives. Also surviving is a son, Walter Kjellander of Roseville, MN; two daughters, Katherine (and Daniel) Kjellander Dare of Avon and Karen Kjellander of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Michelle and Eric Dare of Avon; a brother, Francis (and Gwen) Kjellander of Leesburg, FL; a sister, Ruth (and Rollie) Kjellander Lawson Nordgren of Edinburg, TX; a sister-in-law, Mary Newton Kjellander of Garden City, ID and several nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Glenn Kjellander and Robert Kjellander and a sister, Hazel Kjellander Wick. He was raised in the Abingdon area and graduated from Abingdon High School in 1946. He retired from Briggs Manufacturing in Abingdon after working for 50 years. He started in the sliphouse, later became a caster and last worked in the shipping department. He served in the Army for two years during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Japan. He coached in the Little League and Pony League baseball programs at the Abingdon Ball Park for many years. He enjoyed football, baseball and basketball. He also enjoyed fishing. He golfed and played men's softball in his early years. He also enjoyed putting in his big garden. He loved to read books and also write his opinions in the Register-Mail. He loved to talk politics. He was of the Protestant faith. He attended the Abingdon United Methodist Church, where he went to Sunday School and church for many years. Cremation was accorded. Memorial service will be at 11:00 am Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at the Abingdon United Methodist Church. Rev. Paul Dinges will officiate. Inurnment will be in Abingdon Cemetery with Military Rites by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday at their home, 806 W. Monmouth St. in Abingdon. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements for the family. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the John Mosser Public Library.
