Freda I. Oliver

81 of Abingdon died at 1:05 am Monday, June 16, 2008 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. Freda was born on March 31, 1927 in Abingdon to Sherman and Izell Peterson Winchel. She married Dale Oliver on February 10, 1946 at the Abingdon Christian Church. He preceded her in death on March 30, 1982. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a grandson Andrew Colwell and an infant sister. Surviving are two daughters, Deena (and Ralph) Slagel of Abingdon and Donna (and Kenny) Colwell of Abingdon; her grandchildren, Mark (and Jaimy) Slagel, Mike (and Robin) Slagel, Rich (and Abby) Slagel, Robby Colwell, Randy Colwell, Kim Colwell and Misty Colwell; her great grandchildren, Taylor Slagel, Riley Slagel, Clay Slagel, Trinity Peterson, Dieondra Crowder and Raheem Crowder; two sisters, Shirley (and Wayne) Green of Abingdon and Georgia Weaver of Bensonville, IL and several nieces and nephews. Freda graduated from Abingdon High School in 1945 and was her class Valedictorian. She was a member of the Half Century Alumni of Abingdon High School. She was a faithful member of the Abingdon Christian Church for 69 years. She also worked as the secretary at the church for 45 years. She taught Sunday School for 24 years. She was a member of the Jolly Grandmothers Club. Freda was dedicated to her family, her work and her faith. Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Thursday, June 19, 2008 at the Abingdon Christian Church, 409 S. Main St. Rev. Jerald Hill will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Wednesday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Memorials in honor of Freda may be made to the Abingdon Christian Church.
