73, of 811 N. Monroe St., Abingdon, died at 11:53 pm Friday, April 4, 2003 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. He was born January 2, 1930 near Abingdon to Albert and Jennie Stegall Johnson. Surviving are one sister, Doris Cox of Galesburg; three brothers, Otis (and Phyllis) Johnson of Altona, Il., Raymond (Viva) Johnson of Williamsfield, Il. and Ralph (and Bobbi) Johnson of Eagle Lake, Texas; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Kenneth, one nephew and two nieces. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1948 and joined the US Army. He served 27 years retirng in 1975 as a Sargeant. He served in the Korean conflict and in Vietnam. He was a member of Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon. He returned to Abingdon after retiring from the service where he worked for Leath Furniture and Mayflower Moving Company, both in Galesburg. He was the caregiver for his Mother until her death in 2001. He was also a member of the Congregational Church in Abingdon. Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon with Eleanor Landon officiating. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery with Military Rites by American Legion Post #381. Friends may call from 6:00 é
