Harry J. Emert, Jr.

84, of Abingdon died at 12:15 am Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at the Care Center of Abingdon. He was born on November 8, 1921 in Peoria, IL to Harry J. and Vera Voss Emert, Sr. He married Betty Doubet on December 31, 1942 in Laura, IL. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Howard (and Tina) Emert of Albany, GA; two grandchildren, Keri Phillips and Kevin Emert; one great granddaughter. He grew up in Peoria and graduated from Peoria Central High School. He served in the US Coast Guard for 3 ½ years during WW II. He was a traveling salesman for Huttig Mfg. in Muscatine, IA for several years. He later worked as a rural mail carrier for 27 years for the US Postal Service St. Augustine Post Office retiring on Dec. 3, 1983. He has lived in Abingdon since 1979 and prior to that in St. Augustine. He was of the Episcopal faith. He was a ham radio operator, belonged to national and state model airplane clubs, was a member of Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post in Abingdon and a member of the Knox County Farm Bureau for over 50 years, was am former member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge 185 AF & AM and was a 32nd degree mason. Cremation will be accorded. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 pm Friday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel followed by a prayer service at 3:00 pm conducted by Rev. Raymond McLaren. Memorial may be made to the Care Center of Abingdon Resident Activity Fund.
