Helen Hobbs Obituary

92 of 409 Memorial Drive, died at 3:11 am Thursday, June 11, 2009 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. She was born on April 6, 1917 in Kansas City, Kansas, a daughter of John Thomas and Katherine (Haley) Kearns. She married N. F. Perkins on October 14, 1942 in Pampa, Texas. He preceded her in death on January 24, 1944. She later married James C. "Pete" Hobbs on October 1, 1946 in Rock Island, Illinois. He preceded her in death on November 29, 1993. Helen was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary E. Hughes. Surviving is one son, Michael Hobbs of Galesburg, a nephew Steve Hughes of New Lenox, IL and cousins. She is also survived by her pet cat, "Kittie". Helen graduated from Austin High School in El Paso, Texas. She worked for the Mountain States Bell Telephone Company in El Paso, Texas and Northwestern Bell in Davenport, Iowa. She later helped her second husband at Hobbs Grocery and Feed Store in Abingdon. She was active in reunions for the members of the Army, 773rd Field Artillery Battalion, which her second husband served with. She was a devoted wife and mother. Funeral service will be at 10:00 am Monday, June 15, 2009 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Father Deus-Dedit Byabato will officiate. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm Sunday, June 14, 2009 at the chapel with a prayer service at 4:45 pm. In her honor, Memorials may be made to the Abingdon Food Pantry.
