Helen Pence Obituary

87, of 2286 Windish Drive, Galesburg, formerly of rural Abingdon died at 12:54 am Sunday, April 13, 2003 at the Galesburg Cottage Hospital Emergency Room. She was born June 18, 1915 in Galesburg to Elmer William and Maza Katherine Sussex Larson. She married Clifford A. Pence, Sr. on September 5, 1941 in Abingdon. He preceded her in death on November 20, 2002. Surviving are two sons, Clifford A. (and Alice) Pence, Jr. of Buffalo Grove, Il. and Stephen W. (and Danuta) Pence of Mt. Laurel, NJ.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Pence of Menlo Park, CA., Joseph Pence and Celine Pence both of Mt. Laurel, NJ.; and one sister, Lucile Aggertt of Terre Haute, IN.. She first attended Victoria High School, Victoria, IL. and then graduated from Cashmere High School in Cashmere, WA.. She graduated from Western Illinois State Teachers College in Macomb, IL. in 1938 and did graduate studies at the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL. She was a school teacher and had taught in a one room schools including Hope School near Victoria, Oak Grove School near Abingdon and Crescent School near Terre Haute, IL. She also taught home economics at Media High School in Media, IL and at United Township High School in East Moline, IL., home economics and chemistry at Oquawka High School in Oquawka, IL., math and science at Abingdon Jr. High School in Abingdon, IL from 1953 until 1964, and science at Lombard Jr. High School in Galesburg, IL. from 1964 until her retirement in 1975. She had lived on the family farm northeast of Abingdon from 1950 until 1997, when she and her husband moved to Galesburg. She was a member of Central Congregational Church in Galesburg. She was also a member of the Col. Jonathan Latimer Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution in Abingdon, Abingdon Home Extension, Abingdon Pottery Collectors Club and New England Women é
