Helen Ross Obituary

85, a resident of the Care Center of Abingdon for the past ten years, passed away at 12:20 am Thursday, September 4, 2003 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. She was born October 15, 1917 near Abingdon to James and Jessie Thurman Morss. She married Edward S. Boyd on December 21, 1937 in Fort Madison, Iowa . He preceded her in death on January 24, 1970. She later married Francis Ross on February 7, 1971 in Abingdon. He survives. Also surviving are four sons, Jerry (and Deanna) Boyd of Little Swan Lake, Avon, IL, Jim (and Dorie) Boyd of Galesburg, Bill (and Cindy) Boyd of Stuart, FL, and Mike (and Penny) Boyd of Abingdon; one brother, Russel Morss of Abingdon; 21 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. In addition she is survived by a step-son, Terry (and Sandi) Ross of Rockford and a step-daughter, Cindy (and John) Ringer of Towanda, IL; 2 step-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Larry Boyd, two grandsons, two sisters and three brothers. She graduated from Prairie City High School and attended Western Illinois Teachers College in Macomb where she studied drama. She had lived in the Abingdon & Bushnell areas all of her life and spent several winters in Plant City, FL. She was acquainted with literally thousands of close friends and relatives throughout the United States and Cananda. She was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church where she active in the church circles and the church choir. She was a member and office holder in the following groups, Legion Auxiliary, Mothers of World War, Grandmothers' Club, Charter member of the Abingdon Community Welfare, member of Home Extension, P.T.A., and Band parents. She had worked as a grocery clerk, clerk and bookkeeper for Paris Hardware and Appliance store, receptionist for the former Tarrant Furniture Store and Funeral Home. She was also a child caregiver for several Abingdon families. She was a consummate homemaker and cook. She enjoyed reading, reciting, sewing, floral arranging and music and was an avid bowler and swimmer and sports fan. She also enjoyed almost any card game. Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Monday at the Abingdon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul D. Dinges and Eleanor Landon officiating. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Friends may call from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Sunday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon. Memorials may be made to Chaddock Boys School, 205 S. 24th St., Quincy, IL 62301 or a charity of the donor's choice.
