Inez M. McElwain

91 of Abingdon died at 1:42 pm Monday, May 19, 2008 at the Care Center of Abingdon. She was born on October 12, 1916 near Knoxville to David and Nellie Nelson Johnson. She married Keith E. McElwain on June 15, 1940 in Knoxville. He preceded her in death on September 22, 2001. Surviving are one son, John (and Judith) McElwain of rural Gilson; two daughters, Dr. Margaret (and Charles) Wilson of Jacksonville, IL and Edith (and Rodger) Harrison of Severna Park, Maryland; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Johnson. She graduated from Knoxville High School in 1934 and attended Western Illinois University. She had lived in Abingdon most of her life and had previously lived in Mt. Vernon for five years and Williamsfield for twelve years. She taught school at the Country Grade School for seven years and at Mt. Vernon for two years. She was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church and the Church Circle. Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the Abingdon United Methodist Church. Rev. Paul Dinges and Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Thursday at the church. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Abingdon United Methodist Church or to John Mosser Public Library.
