, 54, of Newport News, VA and formerly of Abingdon, died at 8:15 pm Thursday, August 12, 2004 at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. He was born November 29, 1949 in Galesburg to William "Mike" and Muriel Irons Suydam. Surviving are his mother, Muriel Suydam of Galesburg; one sister, Tina (and Randy) Hartz of Abingdon; aunts, uncle and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1967 and was a member of the National Honor Society. He later attended Knox College in Galesburg for two years and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. While living in St Louis he was a music critic for the St. Louis Post Dispatch Newspaper and was a music teacher at Washington University. He played piano one summer for the St. Louis Municipal Orchestra. He was a music teacher and librarian at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, OR where he lived for several years and had just recently moved to Newport News. Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Tuesday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon. Rev. Paul Dinges will officiate. Friends may call from 5:00 until 7:00 pm Monday at the chapel. Cremation will be accorded following the service.
