Lulu A. Goddard Stephens

94 of Abingdon died at 5:55 pm Friday, August 31, 2007 at the Care Center of Abingdon. She was born February 4, 1913 in Fulton County, IL to Leonard and Mary Hoyle Bryan. She married Harold R. Goddard on May 10, 1938 in Burlington, IA. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1956. She later married Orion A. Stephens on March 6, 1965 in Abingdon. He preceded her in death on September 19, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters. Surviving is an adopted daughter, Carol; a sister, Bessie Harland of Macomb; two brothers, Royal (and Margaret) Bryan and Lowell (and Ruth) Bryan of Macomb; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews; a stepson, Jan (and Nancy) Stephens of Knoxville; two stepdaughters, Mary (and Bill) Hendryx of Canton and Donna (and Jim) Santiago of Galesburg; 4 step grandchildren and 5 step great-grandchildren. Lulu had lived in Abingdon since 1929. She was a beautician and owned and operated Lulu's Beauty Nook until retiring in November of 1980. She was a charter member of the Business and Professional Women and served two years as District Chair of the Business and Professional Women. She was also a charter member of the Illinois Hairdressers Association and the National Hairdressers Association. She was also a charter member of the Abingdon Historical Society. She also helped to organize the start of the library at the Care Center of Abingdon. She was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church and had served as a Sunday school teacher, was the church librarian for 30 years, was a deaconess and was chairman of the memorial committee. Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Rev. Jerald Hill and Eleanor Landon will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm Tuesday at the chapel. Memorials may be made to the Abingdon Christian Church Library.
