84, of Abingdon died at 7:55 am Sunday, September 7, 2008 at the Care Center of Abingdon. Mary was born on March 11, 1924 in Washington County, Kentucky, a daughter of Bert and Virgie Newton Spalding. She married Charles M. Cecil on April 29, 1940 at Holy Cross, Kentucky. He survives. She is also survived by four sons, Jerry (and Georgine) Cecil of Abingdon, Marty (and Jackie) Cecil of Knoxville, Kenny (and Frances) Cecil of Abingdon and Jim (and Cheri) Cecil of Abingdon; three daughters, Ann (and Gerald) Bjorgo of East Galesburg, Connie (and Bill) Alton of Abingdon and Lois (and Greg) Miller of Abingdon; 17 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Elaine Carol Cecil, five brothers and four sisters. She had lived in Abingdon since 1957. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. Mary loved flowers and sewing. She volunteered at the Abingdon Food Pantry for several years and was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 Auxiliary. She was also privileged to babysit for and spend time with many of her grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon. Father Joseph Presley will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. The family invites you to join with them at a luncheon at the American Legion Post in Abingdon following the service at the cemetery on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Care Center of Abingdon Activity Department or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
