Matthew J. Nelson

Matthew J. Nelson, 48, of Champaign, Illinois formerly of Galesburg passed away peacefully Monday, February 28, 2022, at his home.

 Matt was born July 29, 1973, in Galesburg the son of John W. and Sharon K. “Kay” (Thomas) Nelson. He married Laura Cinnamon, they later divorced but remained good friends to co-parent their son, Arlo.

Matt is survived by his son, Arlo Nelson of Mahomet, Illinois; his father, John Nelson of Galesburg; his brothers, Mike Nelson of Denton, Texas and Joe Nelson of Galesburg; his girlfriend, Kelly Bryant and her son, Jonah Webb both of Champaign; his nephew, Tyler (Sara) Nelson and his niece, Emma Nelson. Matt is preceded in death by his mother and his nephew, Sam.

Matt graduated from Galesburg High School in 1991 and Eastern Illinois University. He worked as a material coordinator for H3 Precision Manufacturing in Champaign.

Matt was an extremely talented writer, writing mainly poetry. Many were blessed to have received a poem written by Matt.  He had a love for the arts and again was an extremely

talented artist. He had a great love for dark craft beers that were not manufactured by a large corporation but rather a locally owned brewery. He had a mischievous smile to go along with his funny disposition. Matt was known to banter with anyone that would banter back. The usual suspects were his own family, including his brothers, his son and his nephew. Matt never knew a stranger and was able to strike up a conversation about anything with anyone.  He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Matt’s wishes were to be cremated. A Celebration of Matt’s life will be held at 1:00 pm Sunday, September 18, 2022 at the Knights of Columbus. Memorial may be to the family to establish a memorial fund at a later date. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com
