86 of 700 W. Jackson St. died at 8:47 pm Saturday, June 19, 2004 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. He was born October 23, 1917 near Hermon in Knox County, to Walter and Gertrude Nelson Slagel. He married Mary E. Kindle on January 29, 1951 in Burlington, Iowa. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Ralph (and Deena) Slagel of Abingdon, Terry (and Judith) Slagel of Rural Galesburg; two daughters, Darlene (and Larry) Snyder of Monmouth and Sherri (and Mark) Forshee of Abingdon; 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; one brother, Carter (and Florence) Slagel of Plane Field, IL; two sisters, Lelah Skinner of Abingdon and Jean Smith of Knoxville. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Clark Stoddard, one daughter, Carol Slagel and two sisters. He had lived in the Abingdon and London Mills areas most of his life. He worked at the Admiral Company in Galesburg for 28 ½ years retiring in 1984. He also worked for several area farmers. He was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church. He was a US Army veteran of WW II and was stationed in Italy and Germany. He was a member of several area antique tractor and car clubs including charter memberships in the Argyle Lake Antique Association and the River Valley Antique Association. Funeral service will be 10 am Wednesday at the Hinchliff- Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon. Rev. Raymond McLaren will officiate. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery with Military Rites by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. Friends may call from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Tuesday at the chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Faith Weavers of the Abingdon Christian Church.
