Michael Gene Jones

60, of Abingdon died at 1:10 am Friday, June 27, 2008 at the OSF St. Mary Medical Center Emergency Room in Galesburg. Mike was born on May 12, 1948 in Galesburg to Raymond and Dona Thurman Jones. He married Jayne Ray on June 29, 1968 at the Abingdon Christian Church. She survives. Mike is also survived by two sons, Kevin (and Shelby) Jones of Abingdon, Kent (and Leslie) Jones of Abingdon and a daughter, Kari Gunther of Aledo; 8 grandchildren; his mother, Dona Jones of Oldsmar, FL; his brothers, Ivan (and Jan) Jones of Bell Buckle, TN and R.C. (and Aimee) Jones of Kewanee. He was preceded in death by his dad, Raymond C. Jones, Sr. and his in-laws, Warren and Helen Ray. Mike had lived in Abingdon all his life. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1966. He attended Western Illinois University from 1966-1968 and then attended Eureka College from 1969 until 1970. He was currently employed at Smurfit-Stone Corporation in Galesburg, where he had worked 16 years. He was baptized at the First Assembly of God in Abingdon. Mike was a past volunteer fireman for the Abingdon Fire Protection District, was a member and past president of the former Abingdon Jaycees, was a former coach & past commissioner of the Abingdon Banty League for 10 years, served as Baseball Coach for Carl Sandburg College for a year, was a member of the Abingdon Pottery Club and was a volunteer for Abingdon Youth Basketball. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Monday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Cremation will follow the visitation. Graveside service will be at 10:00 am Wednesday at the Abingdon Cemetery. Mark McCurry will officiate. Memorials may be made to the family or a charity of the donor's choice.
