Mr. Harry "Smitty" Smith Obituary

Mr. Harry “Smitty” Theodore Smith, 70 of rural Abingdon, passed away at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, December 28, 2019 at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg. 

He was born September 17, 1949 in St. Augustine, Illinois, the son of Harry Bill and Cecilia (McLeran) Smith.  He married Pamela K. Dalton on April 27, 1976 at the Knox County Courthouse.

Harry is survived by his loving wife of almost 44 years, Pam; four sons, Brett A. Smith of Abingdon, Scott T. (and Ashley Fishel) Smith of Abingdon, Kent D. Pedersen of Galesburg and Chad J. (and Dee) Pedersen of Mackinaw; three granddaughters, Karyssa B. Pedersen, Kylee R. Pedersen and Madison K. Smith; his siblings, Hank McLeran of Monmouth, Tim Smith of Johnston City and Rose Collins of Galesburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Bobby Smith and two sisters, Shirley Bohanan and Sharon “Cookie” Smith.

Smitty lived in the Abingdon area all his life.  He attended Abingdon schools and later earned his GED.  He was a Vietnam Veteran and served in the United States Marine Corps and earned the rank of Corporal.  He later attended Carl Sandburg College and earned two Associate Degrees.  He worked for the Galesburg Mental Health Center and later worked 16 years at the Henry Hill Correctional Center in Galesburg, retiring on December 12, 2002.  He was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon.  He enjoyed fishing with his best friend, Jim Carothers.  He also loved his Green Bay Packers and his Tennessee vacations with his granddaughters.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, January 5, 2020 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel.  Burial with Military Rites will be at the Abingdon Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the chapel.
