Mike was on the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association Board when in 2008 the Sandburg Site became my responsibility. Quickly I learned of Mike’s dedication to the Association, to Sandburg’s legacy, to history. His opinions were based on thoughtful study, and I always listened when he spoke. I am grateful I got to know him. He will be greatly missed

What a guy, that Mike Hobbs. Big hearted. Kind. A true gentleman. Smart. Passionate about fairness and democracy. A model citizen who always advocated for the less privledged. A serious student of history. Loved sports, especially his White Sox.
Like Abraham and like Carl, his roots were firmly planted in Illinois soil. Mike shared many qualities of those earlier men of the prairie. Mike Hobbs touched many who are grateful for his friendship and now grieve his passing.

I have nothing but good memories of Mike. We met some years back and we both did research and wrote an article together on Civil War Veteran Matthew Gaffney. Sometimes we would meet for lunch at the Grandview, go to a meeting at the Warren County Museum, or just go for a ride to check out a cemetery. Mike also shared a few holiday meals with my family. I will miss these outings with Mike. May he RIP!
