Obituary

Mr. Marvin L. Baker, 89, of DeLong, Illinois died 7:36 a.m. Friday, September 1, 2023, at Allure of Lake Storey, Galesburg. 

He was born June 26, 1934, in Avon, Illinois to Kenneth and Hulda (Stick) Baker.  He married Shirley Booton, July 27, 1963, in Abingdon, Illinois. 

Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Shirley Baker of DeLong, a son, Troy Baker of DeLong, a daughter, Dana (and Rick) Wester of Douglasville, Georgia, a sister, Suzanne (and Abe) Fitch of Zephyrhills, Florida, five grandchildren, Troy James (and Ashley) Baker, Kyla Baker, Dylan (and Christina) Baker, Lori (and Bob) Ryan, and Kari (and Matt) Amos, and four great grandchildren, Jackson Ryan, Adelaide Ryan, Leo Amos, and Lily Amos.  He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Richard Baker and Jerry Baker. 

Marvin graduated from Avon High School.  He then served in the United States Navy for four years as a Fireman.  He worked for Outboard Marine Corporation, Gale Products Division in Galesburg for 29 years.  He then was a truck driver for Heil, Brown and Atlas trucking companies until his retirement in 1996.  He was a member of the Covenant Church in Galesburg.  He was a member of the VFW Post #2257 in Galesburg and the Eagles Club in Florida.  He served on the Orange Township Board and was the Fire Chief for the DeLong Volunteer Fire Department for several years.  He enjoyed trap shooting, hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling.  Most of all he loved spending time with his wife and family. 

As Marvin requested, cremation will be accorded.  A graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 8, 2023, at the Abingdon Cemetery.  Rev. Tom Ek will officiate.  Military Rites will be conducted by the Knox County Honor Guard.  Memorials may be made to the VFW Post#2257 or to the National Kidney Foundation.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Service Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
