Mr. Michael Matejewski Obituary

Mr. Michael A. Matejewski, 76, of Galesburg, Illinois passed away at 12:47 pm Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at his home.

Michael was born on September 20, 1945, in Canton, Illinois the son of William and Zelma (Yocum) Matejewski. He married Judith Sweeney on January 15, 1997, in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on January 9, 2022.

In addition to many friends, Michael is survived by his brother, William Matejewski; his sister, Sandra Schultz; his Aunt Eileen Yocum all of Canton; his stepdaughter; four step grandchildren and eight step great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Mike was a United States Army Veteran serving in the 101st Airborne stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Upon returning to the area, he began working at International Harvester Forge Shop in Galesburg. He then went on to work highway construction jobs with his brother on the shovel crew. In 1966, Mike went to work for Mississippi Valley Line where he started his career on the towboats and within his first year, he made 1st mate. He continued on for 35 years running the Mississippi River. Boy, could he tell you some great tales from the river. Mike also had a love for woodworking projects which included, his and Judie’s home. Mike had a quick smile for those that knew him best and will be missed.

Mike’s wishes were to be cremated. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia Research Foundation.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
