Mr. Richard “Rick” H. Harshbarger, Jr. 74 of rural Abingdon, passed away at 10:29 a.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born January 28, 1946 in Galesburg, the son of Richard “Dick” Henry Harshbarger, Sr. and Helen (Chick) Harshbarger. He married Linda Fluke on August 4, 1984 at the Berwick Baptist Church.
Rick is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Linda; his children, Jeff (and Cindy) Harshbarger of Cameron, Amy Harshbarger of Knoxville, Janette (and Brandon) Otto of Quincy, Lora (and Drue) Calvert of Macomb and Richard Michael Harshbarger of Washougal, Washington; 7 grandchildren, Samantha Fox, Cameron Harshbarger, Noah Richard Harshbarger, Josie Calvert, Lily Gabriel, Makiah Harshbarger and Brody Otto; one sister, Carol (and Hollis) Palmer of Abingdon; and nephews and nieces and their families, whom he was very close to.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Payton.
He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1964. He then served in the Army in the Vietnam War and earned the Rank of Sargent E-5. He worked for the Warren County Highway Department for 33 years, last serving as Maintenance Foreman and retiring in 2001. He later was elected as the Road Commissioner for Floyd Township, Warren County and served until 2012. He was a member of the Berwick Baptist Church. He was also a member of the former Abingdon Jaycees and was a member and past-president of the Road Commissioners Association. He enjoyed being on the farm, gardening and spending time with his family.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, February 2, 2020 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel. Cremation will be accorded following the visitation. Military Rites by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 and graveside service with Rev. Tom Smith and Susan Palmer officiating will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, February 3, 2020 at the Meridian Cemetery located between Abingdon and Berwick.
