Mr. Robert “Bobby” L. Sampson, 81 of Galesburg and formerly of Abingdon, passed away at 2:30 a.m. Friday, March 20, 2020 at Aperion Care Galesburg North.
He was born December 13, 1938 in Hermon, the son of Robert “Pappy” H. and Ethel M. (Jennings) Sampson. He married Mildred “Midge” Taylor on March 8, 1957 in London Mills.
Bobby is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Midge; one daughter, Beth Sampson Swanson of St. Louis, Missouri; one son, Doug Sampson of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Derrick (and Catherine) Swanson of Mascoutah, Illinois and Trisha (and Kevin) Lybarger of East Galesburg; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Sampson of Toulon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Howard Sampson.
He attended Spoon River Valley High School. He was truck driver and co-owned VSM Trucking in Abingdon for 38 years with his brother, Howard. He attended First Assembly of God while living in Abingdon. He has lived in Galesburg since 1996. His hobbies included fishing, racing with his son Doug at the Knox County Speedway, going to the Daytona 500 races and tinkering in his garage. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
As he requested, cremation will be accorded. Private burial of his ashes will be at a later date and as he said “on a nice day” in the Abingdon Cemetery. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
