Mr. Thomas Lee "Tom" Sloan

Mr. Thomas Lee “Tom” Sloan, 78, of Abingdon, Illinois, died 11:15 p.m. Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Marigold Health Care Center, Galesburg, Illinois.

He was born May 12, 1946, in Galesburg to Roy and Grace Marie (Price) Sloan. He married Anita Dykeman on June 10, 1965. He later married Celia M. Rice on October 5, 1985, in Abingdon.

Surviving is his wife of 39 years, Celia Sloan of Abingdon, a daughter, Lianna (and Tom) Mastin of Maquon, Illinois and their children, James Dalton Ita and Addison Ita Jones, a stepson, Shad Hall of Polaski, Iowa, and his children and stepchildren, Lane Hall, Allison Hall Martin, Grey McCoy, and Logan McCoy, a son-in-law, Jason Nelson of Delong, Illinois, and his daughter, Kinley Nelson, a brother, Roy (and Marie) Sloan of Colorado City, Texas, a brother-in-law, Bill Williamson of Big Spring, Texas, and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepdaughter, Dana Nelson, a brother, Richard Sloan, and three sisters, Rose Speaker, Judy Williamson, and Sandy Boyer.

Thomas attended Abingdon Schools. He served in the United States Air Force during Vietnam from 1965 to 1968. He worked at the Abingdon Pottery and Admiral /Maytag Manufacturing Company. He then was a heavy equipment operator for Amoco Pipeline in Laura, Illinois for 20 years and retired in 2001. After retirement he hauled campers across the country, including into Alaska. Tom enjoyed going to flea markets, deer hunting and tinkering and fixing things in his garage. He and Celia loved to hunt gems together in mines at Crystal Mountain, the Carolina’s and in Arkansas.

Cremation will be accorded. A visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2024, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Service Abingdon Chapel. Military honor’s will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2024, at the chapel by the Abingdon American Legion Honor Guard.
