Mr. Walter "Jay" Gordon

Walter “Jay” Gordon, 82, of Galesburg, died at 8:08 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2020, in OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

He was born July 20, 1937, in Harpersville, Alabama, the son of Isaac and Elnora (Kidd) Gordon.  He married Anna Kimbrough in 1957.  To this union three children were born, Marsha, Walter, and Terryl.  He later married Sandra L. Jones on December 7, 1974, in Galesburg.  She preceded him in death on January 25, 2019 after 44 years of marriage.

He is survived by a son, Walter J. (Susan) Gordon of Galesburg; a daughter, Terryl Gordon of Maplewood, Minnesota; a step-daughter, Julie (Jones) Smith of Galesburg; seven grandchildren, Misty, Dana, Sharnel, Terra, Ashley, Walter III, and Kyle; 10 great grandchildren; a host of great-great grandchildren; a step-sister, Donna (Gilbert) Carson of Chicago; a nephew, Conley Mayes of Chicago; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members and friends.  

Additionally, he was preceded in death by his father, Isaac Gordon; his mother, Elnora Wallace; his stepfather, Tommy Wallace; a daughter, Marsha Gordon; a great grandson, Randy Davis; a sister, Tommy Jean Mayes; and a nephew, Derrick Mayes.

Jay worked at Galesburg Ready Mix for many years before retiring in 2000.  He was of the Christian faith.

A celebration of life will be 10 a.m. to noon, Friday, June 19, 2020, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel.  Due to social distancing limitations related to the COVID-19 pandemic, visitors will be limited to 10 at a time and face masks will be required.  Cremation will be accorded following the celebration of life with private family burial on Saturday in Linwood Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the family.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
