Mr. William F. “Bill” Swank, 93, of Galesburg, Illinois passed away at 6:30 am Saturday, April 4, 2020 at Aperion North Nursing Home.
He was born February 26, 1927 in Gilson, Illinois the son of Charles and Clara (Keller) Swank. He married Ilene Riesabieter McCurdy in Hannibal, Missouri on July 9, 1989. She preceded him in death on January 5, 1999.
Bill is survived by his son, Alvin Swank of Seymour, Missouri, two daughters, Amber Swank and Carol Lee both of Galesburg; two sisters, Aurora Rigg and Mary Morlan both of Galesburg Illinois; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Bill served In the US Army during WWII as a Tech 5. He was stationed in the Philippines and Japan. He loved to sit and tell stories of his time in the service. In 2010, Bill got his wish of attending the Honor Flight.
Bill worked as a truck driver for Willis Steel for over 20 years and was a farm hand for over 30 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Salvation Army. Bill was an avid collector of model cars and clocks. He was also known as a very competitive checker player, never wanting to lose a game.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:00 am Thursday, July 9, 2020 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel with Major Rick Ray officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:00 am at the chapel. Due to social distancing limitations related to the COVID-19 pandemic, seating will be limited and face masks will be required. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery in Monmouth with Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com
