Mrs. Alice “Toot” M. (Lewis) Smith, 81, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 4:30 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2025, at her home. 

She was born August 26, 1943, in Monmouth to W. Ray and Frances M. (Myers) Lewis.  She married Harold Dean Smith on July 15, 1961, in Abingdon, Illinois.  He preceded her in death on August 23, 2017. 

Surviving are her children, Cindy (and Robb) Downard of Galesburg, Sally (and William) Anderson of Jackson, Tennessee, Melody (and Robert) Karr of Abingdon, Danny (and Patty) Smith of Galesburg, Joe (and Joyce) Smith of Galesburg, and Mandy (and Nick) Reading of Galesburg, her siblings, Raymond Lewis of Abingdon, Don (and Marty) Lewis of Abingdon, Dave (and Trish) Lewis of Abingdon, Pat (and Allan) Christoffersen of Abingdon, Barb Hawks of Missouri, and Bonnie Gibbs of Abingdon, a daughter-in-law, Donna Smith of Galesburg, 30 grandchildren, and 58 great grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold, a son, Steven Lee Smith, a daughter, Dawn Renee’ Smith, a sister Kay Lewis.

Alice, Toot, Grandma Alice, Aunt Alice, Mama, or whatever she is to you; went peacefully to be with her Jesus. Even though she worked, her main job was looking after her kids, grandkids, and everyone else’s kids. She never knew a stranger. And if you were lucky enough to have met her, she would have welcomed you in as family.

Cremation will be accorded. A visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday May 9, 2025 at New Harvest Church in Abingdon, Illinois. A graveside service will be held the following day, Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 12:00 PM in Abingdon Cemetery with Pastor Mike Forbis officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Saint Jude Children’s Hospital. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services, Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
