Mrs. Marna Mae (Boyer) Johnson, 99, of Abingdon, Illinois died 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Illinois.
She was born May 23, 1925, at home near Abingdon, in Indian Point Township, the daughter of Vernon and Hilma (Roberts) Boyer. She married Arlien Johnson on June 30, 1946. He preceded her in death on August 31, 2006.
Surviving is a sister, Margueritte “Peg” Thomas of Abingdon and a brother, Danny Boyer of Rapatee, Illinois, and 22 nieces and nephews. Marna was the oldest of ten children. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, Joyce Hensley, Wanita Way, Holly Powell, and Jackie Timberlake, three brothers, James Boyer, Donnie Boyer, and Larry Boyer, along with two nephews, Mike Boyer and Tim Boyer.
Marna was raised and educated in Abingdon where she graduated from Abingdon High School in 1943. She attended Browns Business College and then worked in the offices of Outboard Marine Corporation, Gale Products Division in Galesburg for several years until her retirement.
She and Arlien were members of the Abingdon Boat Club. Marna was a member of the Abingdon American Legion Auxiliary since 1947, where she served as the president for some time. She was a Legion Member up until the time of her passing. She was also an avid bowler on the Monday night women’s bowling team. Although Marna never had any children of her own, she followed her many nieces and nephews in their numerous sporting events and adored each and every one of them.
Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 8, 2024, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery following the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Abingdon First Responders or Abingdon American Legion Auxiliary. Online condolences and memories may be left on the funerals home’s website at www.h-p-w.com.
