Mrs. Phyllis Wallace Obituary

Mrs. Phyllis Wallace, 91, of Wataga, Illinois, died 12:24 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2024, at Seminary Manor in Galesburg, Illinois. 

She was born May 30, 1932, in Speer, Illinois to Lester and Ethel Mae (Russell) Gruner.  She married R.E. Wallace, Jr. on July 31, 1955, in Princeville, Illinois.  He preceded her in death on June 11, 1999. 

Surviving is her daughter, Terri Wallace of Wataga, two nephews, Steven (and Terry) Mace of Bloomington, Illinois and Curtis (and Monica) Mace of Carmel, Indiana, several great nieces and nephews including Michael Mace, Austin Mace, Erika Foo, Christopher Mace, and Travis Tesdall, and a great-great niece, Roselynn Tesdall.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Ruth Mace.

Phyllis graduated from Princeville High School in 1950.  She continued her education and graduated from McMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois in 1954.  She taught in the Galesburg School District #205 from 1954 to 1987.  She retired after 33 years of teaching in 1987.  She was a devoted teacher who often was seen helping students before or after school.  Often, she could be seen at local sporting events taking tickets or helping out in other ways.  Phyllis had a keen interest in her ancestry.  She authored a book entitled, “Our Scottish Russell’s”.  She also edited and copied articles in the newspaper, “Front and Finish”, a newspaper for dog obedience.  Phyllis had a great skill for sewing.  She spent many hours making elaborate Halloween costumes for her great nephews.  She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. 

As Phyllis requested, cremation will be accorded.  A graveside service will be at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the Princeville Cemetery.  Deacon Michael Crummer will officiate.  Memorials may be made to the Autism McLean.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Service Galesburg Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
