84, of 102 S. Ohio Ave., Abingdon died at 5:00 am Monday, March 3, 2008 at his home. He was born on December 9, 1923 in Little York, IL, a son of Abel Calvin and Clara Bertha Leighton Brown. He married Mable May McCulloch on September 4, 1948 in Kahoka, MO. She survives. Oscar is also survived by two sons, Jeff Brown of Abingdon and Bruce (and Brenda) Brown of Walker, Louisiana; a daughter, Gloria (and Winston) Thompson of LaHarpe, IL; two sisters, Olove Hagmeier of Keokuk, IA and Charlotte Beard of Delong, IL; 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter-in-law Shirley Brown, 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Oscar served in the Navy during WW II on the Battleship U.S.S. Washington. He was a Purple Heart recipient and received the Pacific and Atlantic Theatre Ribbons. He was a life member and past commander of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon and had served on the Firing Squad since 1986. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member of the U.S.S. Washington Reunion Group and a past member of the VFW. He worked as a mechanic at the Ford garage in Keokuk, IA, the Chevrolet garage in Fort Madison, IA. He later worked as a mechanic at Dechow Motors in Abingdon for 11 years and then at Dohrn Transfer in Galesburg from 1961 to 1984. He also owned and operated Brown's Bear Wheel Alignment at his home in Abingdon, retiring in 2002. He was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church and was past president of the church board, was a past elder of the church and was a member of the Men's Sunday School Class. Oscar was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan. Funeral service will be 11:00 am Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Rev. Jerald Hill will officiate. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery with Military Rites by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Friday at the chapel. Memorials may be made to Abingdon Christian Church or Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 Firing Squad.
