Rev. George Haney Wilson

95, of Abingdon, Il, passed away at 10:23 am Monday, May 1, 2006 at the Care Center of Abingdon in Abingdon, IL. He was born September 24, 1910 in Raytown, MO to James Luther and Arminta (Haney) Wilson. He married Eva A. Jones on June 30, 1946 in Keithsburg, IL and they spent 53 loving years together. She preceded him in death on Nov. 4, 1999. He is survived by his children, Rebecca Robson of Lawton, OK, Saford (Kathy) of Mundelein and Marsha (Steve) Mingione of Fullerton, CA, 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters; and 2 brothers. He was ordained as a minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on May 29, 1938 at the First Christian Church in Lawrenceville, IL. He served for 6 years as field secretary for the interdenominational Christian Endeavor Movement. He held many pastorates from 1941 to 1977, including Christian Churches in Henry and Putnam, IL, Christian Church, Keithsburg, IL, Christian Church Virginia, IL, Christian Church Macinaw, IL, Christian Church Spencer, SD, Coldbrook Christian Church Cameron, IL, Central Christian Church Havana, IL, Christian Church, Illliopolis, IL, Christian Church Mechanicsburg, IL, the Blandinsville Christian Church and Old Bedford Christian Churches, simultaneously. During Georges' "semi-retirement" from 1977 - 1986, he served as interim pastor at The Christian Church of Cuba, associate pastor of Abingdon Christian Church and pastor of Abingdon Congregational United Church of Christ. George was named Pastor Emeritus at several Churches including, Abingdon Congregational United Church of Christ, Abingdon Christian Church and the First Christian Church of Keithsburg. After his retirement he served 3 years as interim minister of Gerlaw Christian Church. Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Thursday, May 4, 2006 at the Abingdon Christian Church. Rev. Raymond McLaren will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Libertyville, IL on Saturday. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Wednesday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel, 206 N. Washington St. Abingdon, IL. A memorial fund will be established in Rev. Wilson's honor.
