Ronald Wherley Obituary

87, of 377 Knox Highway 5, Abingdon, died at 3:24 am Saturday, November 29, 2008 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. He was born on February 3, 1921 in Vermont, IL to George Clayton and Gladys Mary Ring Wherley. He was raised by and worked for his uncle and aunt, Tom and Minnie Ring. He married Maxine Thomas on April 15, 1950 at the Congregational Church in Abingdon. She preceded him in death on December 27, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one son David Wherley and a sister Dorothy Stegall. Jack is survived by four sons, Larry (and Judy) Wherley of RR Abingdon, Tom Wherley of RR Abingdon, Roger (and Joan) Wherley of Broken Arrow, OK and Richard (and Dana) Wherley of Eureka; one daughter, Suzanne (and Rod) Batson of Abingdon; 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Howard of Arizona and Shirley (and John) Dixon of Minnesota. He grew up in Galesburg. He later served in the Army Air Corps as a mechanic during WW II with the 25th Bomb Squad and he attained the rank of Sergeant. He was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. He moved to the family farm in 1952 and farmed for 54 years and raised dairy cattle for over 40 years. He was a member of American Milk Producers, a charter member of the Abingdon Community Festival Association and was a past member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge. Jack and Dewey Gordon also coached the Pirate team of the Abingdon Little League when their sons were playing. Graveside service with military rites will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at the Abingdon Cemetery. Rev. Bob Malone will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Monday, December 1, 2008 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.
