Mr. Stanford R. Shover, 92, formerly of Abingdon, passed away at 10:05 a.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at the Roseville Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Roseville.
He was born September 9, 1927 in London Mills to Harry A. and Clara (Timmons) Shover and they preceded him in death.
Survivors include one son, Brian (and Jodi) Shover of Monticello, Wisconsin; two grandsons, Bryss and Jovan; and many loving cousins.
Stanford received his Master’s Degree in Education from Western Illinois University in 1954 and completed additional work at the State University of Iowa. He taught 60 years in Knox County schools and was an instructor at Carl Sandburg College.
He was a member and past president of the Abingdon Rotary Club and a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church, where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent. He was a member and past vice-president of the Illinois Federation of Teachers. In 1990, he was elected Teacher of the Year by the Illinois Adult and Continuing Education Association and he had served on that organization’s board of directors. In 2005, he received the President’s Award for his service for adult education. He was a member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge #185 and the Abingdon Pottery Collectors Club.
As he requested, cremation will be accorded. The family will receive relatives and friends from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2019 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel. Private burial of his ashes will be in West Midway Cemetery near London Mills.
