Sterling LeGate Obituary

95, a resident of the Care Center of Abingdon, died at 1:29 am Saturday, September 23, 2006 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. He was born on June 1, 1911 in Supply, Arkansas to George Washington Lafayette and Laura Bell "Dolly" Pringle LeGate. He married Evelyn Welch on January 26, 1935 in Dato, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on July 17, 1992. Surviving are two daughters, Elsie (and Bill) Mathias and Wanda (and Dave) Courter all of Abingdon; a sister, Louise "Lucy" LeGate of Pocahontas, Arkansas; 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, two half brothers and three half infant brothers. He moved to Illinois in 1938. He worked at the Abingdon Pottery and later at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg where he retired from in 1972. He was a charter member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Abingdon where he served as a deacon. He was also a retired minister, having served the former Church of God of Prophecy in Galesburg. Graveside service will be at 2:00 pm Monday, September 25, 2006 at the Abingdon Cemetery. Rev. Warren Cummins will officiate. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 1:45 pm Monday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Church of God of Prophecy.
