Virgel K. Herren

72 of Galesburg died at 5:25 pm Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006 at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg. He was born September 23, 1933 in Fredrick Township near Rushville, IL to Loren and Gladys Mae Freiley Herren. Surviving are his mother, Gladys Herren of Galesburg; one brother, Roger Herren of St. Louis, MO; two sisters, Alene Herren of Galesburg and Mary Spurlock of Pittsfield, IL; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and half bother, Loren Lee Herren. He graduated from Abingdon High School and attended the University of Illinois, where he was a member of the ROTC. The ROTC was activated for the Korean Conflict, while serving there in the Air Force, he became a disabled veteran. He received the National Defense Service Medal. While in College he received two congressional appointments, one to West Point Military Academy and one the US Air Force Academy. Graveside service will be 1:00 pm Saturday at the Abingdon Cemetery. Rev. Ron Scarlett will officiate. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Boy Scout Troop 242.
