Waif R. Johnson

83 of Galesburg, formerly of Abingdon died at 4:21 pm Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. He was born on May 14, 1925 in Ripley County, Missouri to Fred and Bertha Ross Johnson. He married Ora Mae Cartee on June 9, 1952 in Pocahontas, Arkansas. She survives. Waif is also survived by his children, Jerry Johnson of Arizona, Terry Johnson of Galesburg and Vanessa (and Ed) Cassiday of Galesburg; 4 grandchildren; one brother, Gene Johnson of Abingdon. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and five brothers. Waif attended schools in Missouri. He had worked at the Pekin Hardwood Lumber Company in Springfield, Illinois and later at the Abingdon Pottery for 33 years retiring in 1989. He was a member of the United Freewill Baptist Church in West Plaines, Missouri. His hobbies included fishing, hunting and gardening. Funeral service will be at 1:00 pm Monday, January 19, 2009 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Rev. Danny Hunt will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Sunday, January 18, 2009 at the chapel. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established in Waif's honor.
