Mrs. Leona Maxine (Schaumleffle) Phipps

Mrs. Leona Maxine Phipps, 86, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 2:34 am Friday, November 10, 2017 at Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg.

She was born March 7, 1931 in Pekin, Illinois the daughter of William and Sarah Helen Gray Schaumleffle. She married Donald W. Phipps on December 20, 1952 in Peoria, Illinois. He preceded in death on April 5, 2007.

She is survived by her son, Donald A. (Christy) Phipps of Mena, Arkansas; her two daughters, Carole S. Phipps of Galesburg and Lisa K. (Jim) Johnson of Peoria; her step sister, Lois Becker of Pekin; eight grandchildren, Heather Higgins-Bukofsky, Amy Lydic, Nathan (Erin) Lester, Patrick (Jessica) Lester, Jason (Becca) Lydic, Chad (Tommie) Lydic, Tanner Johnson and Bryce Johnson and two great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Bill Winchester, five brothers, a sister, and her grandson, Ryan Higgins.

She worked as a LPN for Dr. Richard Flacco and Dr. Giles for many years. She volunteered for the Galesburg Rescue Mission and Women’s Shelter. Leona attended the First Baptist Church. She loved to travel, read and sew. She enjoyed being a housewife and was a great mother to her children and grandmother to her grandchildren.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 11:00 am Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Visitation will be 10:00-11:00 am Saturday at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Galesburg Rescue Mission and Women’s Shelter or Hospice Compassus.
